It really depends on what you’re hoping to build. A basic 12×20 ground-level deck without railings might start around $20K. But if you’re dreaming big, with a roof cover, lighting, or even an outdoor kitchen, we’ve had builds go well over $200K.
That said, I always try to work within your budget. I’ll show you options at different price points, explain the trade-offs, and help you get something that makes sense financially and still feels like a win.
For Colorado weather, I usually recommend composite decking like Trex or Deckorators. They’re more durable in our dry climate and you won’t have to sand or stain them every year.
Wood might seem cheaper up front, but out here it dries out fast, splits, and needs a lot of upkeep. If you love the look of real wood, I’ll walk you through some options, but I’ll also explain the long-term maintenance so you’re making the call with eyes wide open.
Honestly? It depends a lot on where you live. Some cities approve permits in 2 weeks, while others, like Boulder, have taken over a year.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but I always do the legwork for you and keep you updated throughout the process.
Some jurisdictions require engineering, some don’t. Some are fast and helpful, others are understaffed or wrapped up in red tape. Either way, I’ll deal with the back-and-forth, so you don’t have to stress.
Once everything’s approved and materials are in, most standard decks take about 5 to 10 business days to build. Bigger or more complex projects can take longer, sometimes 3–4 weeks.
Where most timelines get held up is in permitting, not building. Some cities move fast. Others, like Boulder, have taken over a year. I’ll keep you in the loop through all of it, so you’re never wondering what’s going on behind the scenes.
Yes, design is a huge part of what I do.
Whether it’s a simple layout or a full-blown outdoor living space, we’ll sketch it out so you can visualize it, get HOA approval, and make sure we’re on the same page.
I also offer standalone design services starting at $750. If you move forward with the build, I take that off the total. And even if you don’t, you still walk away with a design you can build from.
That’s my favorite kind of project.
A lot of builders will shut you down if it’s not something they’re used to. But I’ve always been the guy who figures out how to make things work, especially when other contractors say no.
